The International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence (IRCAI) https://ircai.org/, based in Ljubljana and operating under UNESCO, serves as a global coordination hub and accelerator for AI-driven initiatives aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Launched in March 2021, IRCAI is dedicated to fostering scientific excellence and promoting AI solutions for sustainable development—including climate action, healthcare, education, social justice, and economic inclusion
IRCAI engages in numerous research and innovation programs, such as the Climate Fellowship Program, AI for Equity Challenge, and the Global AI & SDG Index, while spearheading groundbreaking projects like RAIDO (robust AI), AI4GOV (public sector), and CyberSANE (security)
It also administers the Global Top 100 AI for SDGs initiative and the IRCAI AI Award, recognizing impactful AI solutions
IRCAI’s extensive network includes UNESCO chairs, global policy panels (e.g., NAIXUS, UNITWIN), and academic-industry collaborations—facilitating knowledge exchange through events such as its AI Action Summit, Multilingual Africa forum, and DigiEduHack
Supported by a focused team of international experts, IRCAI offers a funding gateway, research partnerships, and visibility for AI innovations advancing sustainable development worldwide.
Under IRCAI’s umbrella, the Journal of Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development (JAISD) https://www.jaisd.org was launched in December 2023 through the NAIXUS Network of Excellence . As the first issue—“AI and Education for Democracy”—demonstrated in September 2024, it bridges AI innovation with societal and environmental goals.JAISD provides an open-access platform for peer-reviewed research, case studies, and reviews that explore AI applications across areas like climate, health, education, and ethics. With a global editorial board spanning academia and industry, it plays a key role in amplifying scholarly discourse on AI’s role in sustainable development.
