The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has announced the development of an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven digital portal aimed at improving access to public health knowledge and enhancing disease response across the continent.

The Africa Health Knowledge Management Portal, developed with support from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Mastercard Foundation, is designed to serve as a centralized hub for health-related data, documents, and policy insights that can inform evidence-based decision-making by African Union member states.

“This portal is not just a knowledge repository site. It’s a smart system built to catalyse evidence-based decision-making, empower national health systems, and boost regional knowledge exchange and cooperation,” said Mosoka Papa Fallah, acting director of science and innovation at Africa CDC.
He added, “The knowledge exists. The challenge has always been access, translation, and application. With this endeavour, we are bridging that gap.”

The portal will operate at three levels, continental, regional, and national, with pilot implementations already underway in selected countries. It is intended to act as a one-stop platform to support the sharing of timely, relevant public health information and to improve coordination across health systems.
Key features include multilingual support, search tools, a chatbot, and real-time document comparison to make public health information easier to access and use. Africa CDC said the platform aims to meet the specific knowledge needs of member states while enabling more effective translation of information into policy and practice.
According to Africa CDC, the portal’s overarching goal is to ensure that vital health knowledge is not only available but also actionable, strengthening disease prevention, improving outbreak response, and supporting resilient health systems across Africa.
